    Introduction

This is an in-depth guide explaining the main gameplay within the Football server. A lot of people understand the concept of a game of football, but within the server there are certain ways of playing that not all players understand. Unfortunately a lot of people assume it's one massive free for all, however there is a certain level of skill involved to be able to get the most out of the game, and to be able to mix in well with other players. Unlike a lot of other servers, Football has a very consistent player base, with the same players joining almost every day. As such, it can be intimidating for new players to join in, as a large proportion of regular players are 'stuck in their ways'. Hopefully using this guide, you will find it easier to join in and get the best experience possible. There are very few servers that run the football mod – and I believe this is the only remaining server run by and looked after by a community whose sole focus is not only on one mod. This means a fairer system for all players, as there are specific rules in place and processes for players and admins to follow – for example, you can't just get permanently banned because you don't know how to play the game, unlike other servers.

    Rates

Interpolation rates are extremely important to each individual player on the football server. Every one may use a slightly different rate to suit their own play style. A lot of players don't even fully understand what difference they make technically, however if you wish to explore this there is a very detailed guide on the Steam Community: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=864504043 **CREDIT GOES TO THE CREATOR OF THE GUIDE AS SHOWN ON STEAM COMMUNITY - I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THIS WHATSOEVER.

Put simply, if you make no adjustments to cl_interp_ratio and cl_interp, you may experience what feels like lagg when hitting the ball. Not only this, if you are trying to win the ball from another player, they will almost always have an advantage. It will make it difficult to both defend and attack, and will render you almost useless as a goalkeeper, as you will struggle to hit the ball at the correct time. You can experiment with different values for the below commands, however I will list mine as I have found them to be good all round values.

    cl_interp_ratio 0

    cl_interp 0

net_graph 1 (this will allow you to check that the values you change have worked correctly)

It's simple to change the value of these commands, but you must be SPECTATOR at the time you input them. Just open developer console and copy and paste or type the command, followed by the value you want. For reference, look for the LERP value on your net graph – using the above commands it should show as 0.0ms.

    General Gameplay

The general idea of the football mod is exactly what you'd think, but with minor differences. As explained above, this is not a free for all. This is a team game. You should still play as a team, as you will find the gameplay experience much more enjoyable, and doing so will make it much easier to play. You will find that if you start chasing the ball when other players are in their own positions, you will get votekicked by other players or warned by an admin (if there is one online). Generally speaking, if you are not familiar with the football mod, you should start playing in defence as this will allow you more time to get used to hitting the ball correctly. Experienced players will almost always play on the wings, as this is a pivotal role and will be the difference between winning and losing. With that being said, players do not have 'set' positions – for example, if you are playing on a wing, someone joins and tries to steal your position, they are in the wrong and will be dealt with accordingly if reported to an admin.

    Positions

Goalkeeper – self explanatory, your main objective is to stop the other team from scoring! You should mainly stay around your goal, as this is where you are needed most. Let your defence deal with anything other than shots on goal. The only exception to this would be if the ball ends up in a corner and you are the closest to be able to clear the ball, just make sure you have enough time to get back into your goal!

Defence – In a game of 6v6 you should have 2 defenders, one on each side. You should focus on stopping the opposing wings for getting the ball near to your goal. Generally you should stay in your defensive half, and can mark the opposing wingers to stop them being able to get the ball. Movement is key in this position, watch where your opponents are going, as it's incredibly easy to move in the wrong direction and give them a massive amount of space to choose a pass. Once you have stopped the ball from reaching an opponent, you should look to pass the ball to one of your wingers or your midfielder – they will take it from there.

Mid – In a game of 6v6 you should have one midfielder. They will serve as both attack and defence, depending on the flow of the game. They should move from box to box, defending against the opposing midfielder and attacking the opponents goal when necessary. This is probably the most underrated position – a good midfielder is crucial to winning a game, as they will help your team at both ends and essentially overload both boxes, if the opposing midfielder isn't as capable (or non existent).

Wing – In a game of 6v6 you should have 2 wings, one on each side. The difficulty of this position entirely depends on the opposition. If they have 2 decent defenders, it will become a lot more difficult to play against. Generally you will have to use the wall the get the ball in the air, and hit the ball whilst in mid air to get the advantage over your opponent. The vast majority of players now have the ability to punish you very quickly if you lose the ball here – the ball can go from one end to the other in seconds. You should be aiming to either pass the ball to your midfielder (who should be around the edge of the box, if not inside it), or passing the ball to your other winger. These players can then take a shot on goal. Obviously if you are receiving the pass from either of these players and are in a scoring position, take the shot! It is recommended that you only play on the wings once you have gained some experience of hitting the ball accurately and consistently – however you can still try this position if no one else is occupying it!

Please forgive me for my appalling editing skills. Yes, this was done with MS Paint.

    Tips and Tricks

    • To get the ball in the air, hit it against a wall whilst close to it. The ball may bounce up into the air, and you will then be able to hit an air pass / clearance in mid air. This is useful when defending to clear the ball up the pitch, and useful for wings to be able to cross the ball.

    • When two players are trying to hit the same ball in the air, the player looking up will always have an advantage. For example, you are trying to hit a ball in mid air down towards the opponents goal, and the defender is trying to clear it up the pitch. The defender will always have the advantage and 9 times out of 10 will clear the ball. There are certain exceptions, for example if you hit the ball well before the defender.

    • You can 'dribble' the ball when you are close to it and looking almost directly down at the ball, as if you are going to hit it into the floor. Be careful though – this takes practice and the ball can still be unpredictable!

    • Always seek to pass to your team mates – depending on your opponents, you may have a lot of time to choose a pass. Players will become less frustrated if you attempt to pass in their direction, rather than just hitting the ball towards the opponents goal every time you get the ball.

    • If you are new, let other players know! Players will be more lenient if they know that you are a new player. Everyone has to start somewhere!

    • Admins are there to help – if you have an issue or want to know more information, ask. If you break the rules you will always be warned before you are punished. Use this opportunity to seek guidance and make your time on the server more enjoyable.

    • Don't leave the pitch – you will be letting your team mates down and wasting a slot on a team, which will become an issue when the server is busy as teams are capped at 8v8.

    • You can block opposition players when defending. What you cannot do is block the opposition goalkeeper, or block the ball anywhere that stops other players from being able to hit the ball i.e. in the corner of the pitch.

    Conclusion

This guide is aimed predominantly at brand new players and so strives to give the basic understanding to be able to get on and play the game. There are many more advanced gameplay mechanics that players will get used to over time. The main thing to remember is that being able to hit the ball consistently is the only real objective for a new player. Once you have nailed this down, you will play more accurate passes, be able to defend and attack more easily and will allow the game to flow more freely.

I appreciate that this is a lot to take in, but this is the amount of detail I believe will give new players the best understanding of how to play the game properly. With that said, if any clarification is needed please give me a message on the forums, reply to the thread, or add me on Steam. I hope to update the contents of this guide by producing a short video which will cover all of the above, which will make it easier for people to grasp.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

    Cheers

    Cheers @kenny7

As I say, this isn't the be all and end all, there is still a hell of a lot more that could be said, but in the interest of keeping the thread as short as possible I decided to keep it as simple as I could. Any more advanced than this and it would pretty much have to be explained in a video as it's way too difficult to explain it all by text.

Absolutely, will likely need a few other players to make it easier to understand. Can do the basics with just one person but not ideal as obviously the vast majority of the time you'd be playing with other players. I'm looking in to basic video editing at the moment, unless there is anyone willing to help edit it all together.

We'll all have to get together on Discord or Skype and piece it all together :)

Perhaps we can pin this thread so it's easier to find for everyone else, for now and in the future? @Boy
