Hei. I am intrigued by how maps are developed. I recently made my own cube map. Nothing fancy. Just getting to know the basics. I watch a lot of videos from TopHATTwaffle and 3kliksphilip. Was wondering if anyone else has any good tutorial or tips for making maps. I am currently focusing on general map building knowledge as I want to get more familiar with how to create shapes, lighting and spawn. My goal is to create an MG map with teleports and bhop and many other things. I also decompiled mg_lego_multigames_v2_d to learn how some MG maps are made. I only decompiled it to learn! Not to copy or anything :/ Spoiler: Firstmap Spoiler: Decompiled
A great way to learn is to keep going with those tutorials as they are very detailed and you learn a lot from them. I recommend https://worldofleveldesign.com/ as another source of information. They also have done lots of YouTube videos. They cover all sorts of mapping tools, not just Source SDK! decompiling other maps is a good way to understand how logic is done so don’t worry about people thinking you’re copying. Lots of maps do the same thing in different ways so study how a good variety of maps do the thing you want to pull off then incorporate all the ideas and your own. start off small, then build up those ideas into something bigger. If you go too big, you’ll overwhelm yourself and end up not being motivated to complete it (happens to me a lot...)
Practice, practice and more practice is the best way to learn. I think you need some natural creativity and ideas to separate yourself from everyone else.
Not claiming to be an amazing mapper, I am mostly sub-par. The general basics I found out by actually editing other maps for my community. I also learnt a lot from mapping on WaW.
