Hi, I have 60 MB virgin media broadband, I have just bought a new PC, assembled it, all drivers installed etc. I had forgot to buy a wifi card when I placed my order, so Nomy suggested a USB dongle thingy, so I got it installed etc, but I'm on the 2.4 ghz internet connection (my 5 ghz ones not showing up), and its very bad on my new PC, very inconsistant, downloading cs:go at like 250 kb max, and atm like 50 bytes, not kb's, not mb's, bytes....... I've tried restarting internet, resetting, uninstalling usb adaptor drivers, re installing etc. Very bad. Been trying to download and install cs:go for 4 and a half hours or more and im barely half way. This is pathetic. Please help me! I get like 15 mb down 5 up or something on the 2.4ghz on my laptop, I can not even get on to the speed test website on my new PC. Thoughts/advise? @Nomy @Lux <- top guys btw, cheers for all your help so far, and everyone else --- Double Post Merged, Sep 5, 2014, Original Post Date: Sep 5, 2014 --- it's so bad.
It was anywhere from 3-5 bars. On my old iMac I would get like 1.5 mb download speed on steam on the 2.4 ghz connection.
Tried front, and two on the back. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Whole internet is very slow on it. Saying that, the internet recently has been poor, but this is a whole new level of poor. not even a kilobyte download speed? lool
Click start and then click run. Type tracert google.com in the black box. Wait until it completes and then right click and click select all. Right click again to copy it and paste that here. Maybe we can find where the problem might be.
I had a similar problem for a very long time, the only solution I found was a wired Ethernet connection, sorry if this didn't help.
How far do you operate from the hub? 3 to 5 bars should be fine as I am also with virgin and I get great speeds. Maybe try investing in a wifi extender/booster. They are fairly cheap and I believe it may help you if the problem is on the hubs end. Another thing Is to ring up virgin as they have great customer service most of the time and will send out a technician as early as the next morning, even in the easiest of cases, free of charge. Also, they are giving out free upgrades to a 100+ mb package and I am not sure if this is for regular customers but I was given 152mbps for free from 60 but I have been with this isp since it was known as NTL even before Virgin bought it so go ahead and ask them if you are eligible for the free 100mb upgrade. It could be that it's not available in your area yet but I wasn't given my first free upgrade till I called in about it.
Windows uses wireless over wired networking as standard. If you have "connection bars" when using wiered/powerline, disable your wireless and see if there is a difference. There should be some atleast.
