A day on Jailbreak but weed is commanding and we are playing on paint... (i am not good with anything)
This December HeLL became 14 year old. The servers we playing together for years, making friends and even creating competitions like this one had their 14th birthday recently and the most of us dont even know how and why this all began, how the first days was etc. So, on this post one of the 2 brothers who were the creators of HeLL will talk about the beginning and the possible future of HeLL, analyzing the plans that may or may not have worked. But thats not all, we also have here old and new HeLL members speaking of their own course of being a part of the community and explaining their methods on recent and common issues. Im talking about @Boy @JayJay @Skip @Wasp @kenny7 This unprecedented multiple interview is a try to make a quick HeLL "timelapse" in order to celebrate these 14 years (from Dec 2006 - Dec 2020 and still counting). Not with using pictures, only by the mouth (or keyboard) of HeLL members. *In order to minimize this post the answers will be on every 'spoiler' of each question. *At the end of every questions i wrote to who that question was for. Without more imports. Enjoy! -HeLL became 14 years old, no ironically some people that playing on servers right now, werent even born back then. So how was the first days and which server started first getting populated? (Boy) Spoiler Boy : " That is correct, 14 years and still counting. It was actually the pub server "]HeLL[ Clan Server" which was running on Nomy's PC. As the pub server was the only server we had back then (before we announced DeathRun and ZombiesEscape servers) - Naturally, all our focus was on the pub server and was first in getting population. I remember we had crazy server physics on the pub server in the early days. Ragdolls and props used to fly towards you when shot, creating a very "hellish" vibe. " -Where this idea came from? (Boy) Spoiler Boy : " I was just a gamer, it was Nomy who was more technical, he was the one who decided we could run servers for the game we absolutely used to love playing. We played CS 1.6 during high school so we were familiar with Counter Strike before we made Source servers. " -Back in the days when you started playing on a daily basis which servers where the most popular ones? (JayJay,Kenny) Spoiler JayJay : " When I first Joined HeLL clan in 2013, I was originally searching for servers called Hosties As previously that's what they was called!I found HeLL clan by fluke and once I started playing,i fell in love.JB was just Fun and excitement all the time with a population of 32+. After Playing on JB for a bit, I obviously got to know the regulars, found out there was other HeLL servers such as ZE, ZM. At this time ZM had it's own population +24 of dedicated players.ZE was sadly never massively populated, as Players had there dedicated servers already, But a few Old school clan members; Wolf, Momi, Mharos, Ryan,Helped and got it to a Friday or Sunday event night. Obviously Over time things change and people moved on. But what initially brought me here is still going strong. I've mainly mentioned server's that I Played On Mostly Because I'm useless at A)bunnyhop B)Aim. Please don't Tell other Clan members as I'll get the boot for sucking. " (oops) Kenny : " My first server that I joined from HeLL was the Football one in 2011/2012, I used to play daily for atleast 3-5-8 hours straight. The popularity was way more back than, than now. We had 20 players each day and everyday a new player joined, I was a shy boy and couldn't make friends back than xD. I still remember some names tho, like Nab, Grimzie and such... A year or 2 later I joined MG and Surf, from there the popularity was also way more than now. surf always had 10-15 players when I joined, and MG around 20, if I remember correctly. But I played more on the FB server than the other because I was a noob back then. At end 2014/2015 I started playing on JB, on my brothers account the playerbase is still the same since that year so I don't really need to tell how many players joined than as now. " -Which was the period(year) you said "HeLL's living epic moments at this period"? (Boy,Skip,Wasp,JayJay) Spoiler Boy : " I would say between 2010 and 2015, those were the golden/epic/prime years for the clan - Thats when we were booming, we had all the servers we needed then, new website/forums, lots of clan members and lots and lots of players. " Skip : " Would’ve been around 2013 I think when I was about 13-14 playing terribly on MG with all these random people I saw as friends. It was always an exciting time to come home from school and chill out on Mg playing courses laughing about anything and everything. " Wasp : " I would say for me this was back in 2011 – 2013 – this was when I first found HeLL and was playing a lot in game. From being terrible at the game (No real changes nowadays lol) and the amount of fun times back then, I feel this was a great time to be involved. The amazing thing about this clan and community is that it is strong – even now, you still have a great laugh at the various events that are going on or in-game and there are amazing characters who regularly play our servers. " JayJay : " Looking back 2016 was probably HeLL Clans Best year for me, We had a Tournament on every other month nearly, The community was at it's peek with people getting involved and wanting to be a part of something! The clan Pulled together and Delivered some great Tournaments. Hopefully Next year we will strive that. " -As being one of the newest hell members, do you feel that you have more responsibilities and there is more pressure until you can call yourself a regular HeLL member? (Skip,Wasp) Spoiler Skip : " The day I was told I was at work trying to fix a bearing I remember it specifically. Wildfire messaged me to get on the server, so I took my laptop (5fps) out to the workshop to logon and see what was happening. It was a very surreal feeling when I joined even though I couldn’t really hear anything or do anything as the wifi was so bad. I wouldn’t say I feel increased pressure now that I’m in the clan. I think the only real pressure was during the period of being Super user, I could definitely feel people judging and analysing the decisions I made. However, I think the pressure of that was released when I did become a clan member giving me that approval/recognition that my decisions had been right, and I was giving off the correct impressions. Becoming a clan member I think has a complete new set of responsibilities and that has always been an exciting thing for me. I’ve always admired the clan members over the years and wondered what it would feel like to be one (I’ll let you in on a secret, they don’t speak to me either ) only kidding. The fact is we have responsibilities to keep the community running and keeping the player base happy. It is definitely something that is finely balanced, and it needs a lot of background work to keep the show moving. So in reality yes there is a lot more responsibility. " Wasp : " I remember being mid-raid on the MMO I play (FFXIV) and Wildfire bugging me to join the server urgently, where I was brought in as a Super User, and then later on as a clan member. This was a shock to me (And probably some of the community who didn't recognise me as I was most active on mainly JB 2011 – 2013/14 (Who even is Tom anyway?!)). Even as a PayAdmin or a Super User you are still expected to act in a certain way and resolve issues in game as they arise with a level of professionalism. Of course there is more responsibility being part of the clan as your decisions and what you say regarding rules or in game debates can change how the mode is played, however we are a big team and no matter what issues come up, we can pool together to get a resolution regardless how convoluted or complex the issue is. " -A lot of mistakes can be made and we often see regs getting banned. How it feels for you as a HeLL member when this reg is actually your friend? (Skip,Wasp) Spoiler Skip : " Obviously, you never want to have to punish a friend but this isn’t always the way. The best way to resolve an issue like this is to keep the two things independent, the same way you would with a relationship and the workplace (excluding steezy). I try to think of it as if I’m a manager and I need everything to flow nicely and reduce conflict/inefficiency from the process (trolls/spammers, etc.). This can be done either by coaching/teaching people or giving out disciplinaries (gags/mutes/bans). At the end of the day, you’re all working towards a goal and I’m just there to help achieve it. Probably a terrible analogy but simply put I don’t associate friendships and admin duties, it’s best kept separate IMO. However, seeing a friend permed is never nice, I think we can all agree on that! " Wasp : " That is probably one of the hardest things to do being part of the clan – even if someone has been a regular and a close friend, you cant give preference to any potential punishments/warnings just because they are a regular or friend – the rules are there for a reason and apply to all, even clan members! " -As an ex admin myself i know that sometimes you might get more emotionally on your judge than you should be,especially when the server is chaos.Have you ever thought that you might pushed it a bit more than you should?By that i mean have you ever regret for a decision you made? (Skip,Wasp) Spoiler Skip : " This one is hard to answer. I don’t think I’ve ever regretted any of my decisions as admin just feel some of them could’ve been improved. When making a decision I try to be as fair as possible; that may be if I know the person taking into account their current attitude in comparison to their usual attitude to make a calculated judgement as to why they are behaving in a certain way. In my first stints as PA I used to rush and make decisions quickly, which I can tell you now is not calculated at all. I think it was down to the ‘heat of the moment’ sort of thing. I much prefer making informed decisions as I’ve aged and it pays off, getting all the information before you punish someone gives you that ability to cover all bases if required, rather than searching for reasons afterwards. " Wasp : " The hardest thing about being a clan member, or even a PayAdmin, is taking yourself out of the situation to think about it with a cool head.Often most of the mistakes or incorrect punishments happen in the “heat of the moment” – the trick is to take yourself away for a bit to calm down, and then look at what happened and the evidence logically to make sure the right action is taken. Since coming back to HeLL after a break of about 3 – 4 years, I dont think I have any regrets about actions I have taken.Accidents do happen, and I have permanently banned people for thinking they were breaking rules – only to have the evidence examined and the ban lifted. I take these as learning examples, as these things happen as we are all human, however the community and other clan members have a wealth of knowledge available and are always happy to help with these types of scenarios. " -CS:GO Jailbreak was a great idea and people were asking for it for a long time. But until now it hasnt worked as expected to.How's your feelings about that? (Boy,JayJay) Spoiler Boy : " I think the players who wanted a CS:GO JB server were the players who originally played CSS JB. We made the server because of the demand/request from the community. Which I think is a great alternative to CSS JB but not as a permanent replacement for our community. I think CSS is more a community based game, while CSGO targets competitive scene. As such, my thoughts are it is worth keeping the CS:GO JB server even though its not populated. It is great for events and odd JB gathering nights. " JayJay : " There was mixed reviews about CS:GO, I believe everyone had the thought's its going to be great and we will all prefer it. But Our initial Getting involved into the CS:GO was delayed due to Restriction's on the Coding and ability to get the server how we wanted. I don't know everyone's thoughts but the mechanics and movements on CSS for Community servers just seem to Outshine Csgo. Maybe I'm just old school and Got use to what I play! CSS will always be my Passion! I did push for CS:GO originally but I don't think its there! " -On a game that its old and the player base of it decreasing,of course this affects HeLL.We can easily see that only a few servers are still active, which are HeLLs future plans to avoid it as possible as this can be? (Boy,JayJay) Spoiler Boy : " We can't really change the facts, it is true the player base is decreasing, not only in HeLL but CSS in general. I think keeping the servers up to date with new maps and carrying on listening to the suggestions that the players give us and trying not to "fix" things if they aren't broken helps in maintaining the player base. We do have plans to further make changes to some of our less active servers, lets see how much of an impact it would make. There is nothing certain, its all trial and error. " JayJay : " I'll be honest! I've gone to other games and always come back. If you have played CSS, It's in your blood. As you say it's getting to the stage where the player base is slowly going down, Is this Steams fault for not making CSS free like CSGO, would it that have an impact on the player base, or would it give a rise to cheaters and give the opportunity for banned players the opportunity to keep avoiding there bans?! We don't essentially know! I do know, this community is a Hobby for one man and over the Years, its brought together one great community, Yes some server's ain't popular as some others but what was intended was to give the community and player base the options to play in a fair style across different game types. Personally I'm not sure what the future holds, But I would expect no matter what the flames ain't going to burn out. " -Competitions are great, they keep the players active and excited to win or have fun.Are you thinking about doing any in the future? (Kenny) Spoiler Kenny : " I'm actually, I did one before, surf event, in the covid lockdown period. But I def want to host more, and with some other clan members. Non-HeLL events are coming too with prizes so you will need to keep an eye on forums for that. Also Im gathering some ideas with other admins so you'll see. I am also curious on what the community wants as an event, might be a good idea to make a poll in the future for more ideas for events. Great things are on his way! Just need some time within these periods :] " -Are you willing to keep this active for a long time or you think there will come the day that you'll say "thats enough,it was good while it lasted but i should quit now"? (Boy) Spoiler Boy : " Me, personally I cannot guarantee how long I would be with the clan but as a community, we don't have plans on shutting down, not in near future anyway." That was my "art" for the Creative Competition with Jingles approval, i hope you guys liked it!
This was great reading about the history of HeLL tbh. Would love a more in depth chronicle of the earlier days (2006-2010) inc. VERY old HeLL members i.e Thinsam2, Silver Dragon, DYSM, djeez, Skuller, as I feel barely anyone knows anything about these foundation members. I genuinlye think it would be interesting to hear about the feud in 2011/2012, when Jizzy/Bloody made a seperate popular clan, but idk if this is STILL a touchy subject.
Again GREAT! it was really cool getting to hear this prospective from the Clan members. I dont think HeLL will ever really die, so many people know and play with each other its like JayJay said, Its in our blood. Hell is also one of like 4 constantly active and always popping servers. Of those Hell is the Only English primary language. I really hope its around for ever!
